Weight and metabolic health
This is the area with the most noise around it and the least honesty. I am not interested in a number on a scale. I am interested in what your blood sugar, liver and thyroid are doing, because those are what change how you feel and what happens to you in twenty years.
This might sound familiar
If two or three of these land, it is worth a conversation.
- A fatty liver result on an ultrasound you had for something else
- Pre-diabetes, or a HbA1c that has crept up each year
- Cholesterol or blood pressure heading the wrong way
- A thyroid sitting in the low-normal range
- Weight that will not move on the same effort that used to work
- Being told to lose weight, with no plan attached
What I look at
The first consultation works through all of this.
- Insulin, not just glucose
- Fasting glucose is often the last thing to move. The pattern usually shows earlier, and that is where change is most effective.
- Liver function
- Fatty liver is common, quiet, and genuinely responsive to dietary change. It is worth treating in its own right.
- Thyroid
- Including the nutrients thyroid hormone depends on, and whether a low-normal result explains what you are experiencing.
- What you are actually eating and when
- Timing, composition and the overnight gap, rather than a calorie count.
- Sleep and stress
- Both measurably affect insulin and appetite regulation. Treating diet while sleeping five hours rarely works.
How I treat it
Steady the blood sugar first — composition and timing of meals, not restriction. Herbs and nutrients with evidence in insulin sensitivity and liver support where they suit your case. Movement that you will actually keep doing. I do not prescribe meal replacements, detoxes, or anything that works by making you hungry.
What to expect, and when
Liver markers and energy often move within eight to twelve weeks. HbA1c reflects about three months, so it is reassessed on that timeline. Keep seeing your GP and keep your medications — this works alongside them, and any change to prescribed treatment is their call, not mine.
Everything above is how I generally approach this area. What you actually get is decided in your consultation, on your case — not from a page.
