Energy and fatigue
Fatigue is the symptom people apologise for. It rarely has one cause, which is exactly why it gets waved through as stress or age — and exactly why it responds well to being taken apart properly.
This might sound familiar
If two or three of these land, it is worth a conversation.
- You sleep a full night and wake unrefreshed
- You hit a wall at three in the afternoon, every day
- Your concentration has gone and you are making uncharacteristic mistakes
- Your iron or thyroid came back "fine" but low
- Coffee stopped working, then started making things worse
What I look at
The first consultation works through all of this.
- Iron, B12 and the low-normal range
- A ferritin of 20 is not deficient on paper and is very often the reason someone feels flattened. Worth reading the numbers properly.
- Blood sugar through the day
- The three o'clock crash usually starts with what happened at breakfast. Very fixable.
- Thyroid function
- Including the parts that are not always tested, and the nutrients thyroid hormone depends on.
- Sleep quality, not just hours
- Time in bed and restorative sleep are different things, and fatigue follows the second one.
- Whether the gut is absorbing
- You can eat well and still be short of what you need.
How I treat it
Correct what is genuinely low, steady blood sugar so the day stops spiking and crashing, and use adaptogenic and nervine herbs to support a system that has been running hard for a long time. Where fatigue follows a virus or a long stretch of stress, recovery is paced deliberately rather than pushed.
What to expect, and when
If there is a clear deficiency, the first change often comes in three to six weeks. Fatigue built over years needs a longer runway, and the plan changes as your capacity comes back.
Everything above is how I generally approach this area. What you actually get is decided in your consultation, on your case — not from a page.
