Digestive health
Digestion is usually where I start, whatever someone came in for. It is hard to fix energy, skin or mood while the gut is inflamed and absorbing badly — and it is very often the gut that went first.
This might sound familiar
If two or three of these land, it is worth a conversation.
- You are bloated by mid-afternoon regardless of what you ate
- Your bowel habits swing between constipation and urgency
- You have cut out more and more foods and feel no better
- Reflux that antacids manage but never resolve
- A diagnosis of IBS, and no plan beyond managing it
What I look at
The first consultation works through all of this.
- What came first
- A course of antibiotics, a gastro bug on a holiday, a stressful year, a pregnancy. Gut problems usually have a start date, and it tells us a lot.
- How you are actually eating
- Not an idealised version. Timing, speed, stress at meals and what happens overnight all change digestion more than most people expect.
- Whether you are absorbing
- Zinc status, iron, B12 and the signs that show on nails, tongue and skin when absorption has been poor for a while.
- The stress link
- The gut and the nervous system run on the same wiring. Treating one and ignoring the other tends not to hold.
How I treat it
Usually a combination: bitter and carminative herbs to get digestion working properly, targeted nutrients where there is a genuine deficiency, and a staged eating plan that adds foods back rather than removing more. Where fermentation or a bacterial imbalance looks likely, we address that before anything else.
What to expect, and when
Bloating and regularity often shift within two to four weeks. Longstanding IBS and reflux take longer — plan on three months of consistent work, with follow-ups to adjust as things change.
Everything above is how I generally approach this area. What you actually get is decided in your consultation, on your case — not from a page.
