Stress, sleep and mood
Wired and exhausted at the same time is one of the most common things I see. The nervous system has been asked to stay switched on for months or years, and it no longer knows how to switch off on cue.
This might sound familiar
If two or three of these land, it is worth a conversation.
- You fall asleep easily and wake at three, fully alert
- Or you cannot get to sleep at all, however tired you are
- A racing heart, a tight chest, a short fuse
- Restless legs that ruin the first hour of the night
- Low mood that sits underneath everything without ever tipping into crisis
What I look at
The first consultation works through all of this.
- Which part of the night breaks
- Trouble falling asleep and waking at 3am point at different things and are treated differently.
- Magnesium, B vitamins and iron
- All three affect sleep and mood directly, and restless legs in particular often tracks iron.
- Blood sugar overnight
- A 3am wake-up is sometimes a blood sugar dip, and that is straightforward to test and change.
- What is actually on you
- Shift work, a new baby, caring for a parent, a job that has become untenable. Treatment that ignores the load rarely holds.
How I treat it
Nervine and adaptogenic herbs used properly are genuinely effective and non-habit-forming — this is one of the areas where herbal medicine earns its place. Alongside that, correcting the nutrients sleep depends on, and practical changes to the hour before bed.
What to expect, and when
Sleep often responds faster than people expect, within two to three weeks. If you are taking prescribed medication for sleep, mood or anxiety, keep taking it — we work alongside it and I check for interactions.
Everything above is how I generally approach this area. What you actually get is decided in your consultation, on your case — not from a page.
